Photos of Young Ferruginous Hawks
Hatched at our Centre

One of our pairs of Ferruginous Hawks jealously guards the nest. This pair Victoria and Albert, have two young with their first breeding.
In these photos, they are about 3 weeks old.
Above one hawklet's head is clearly visible at the left of the nest, the tip of the other's head is below his Mom's folded wing and is barely visible in the photo.

Here both young hawklets are clearly visible even though the photo was taken through a peep hole. The larger of the two is in front of his Mom with a piece of food in his mouth, and his sibling is asleep at the left side of the nest.

The layout of this photo is the same as above, except that the larger hawklet now has a feather from his parents in his beak pointing down to our right.

Well it looks like Mom is in need of a well deserved break! "(If I don't get away for a few minutes, I'll just go nuts!" she seems to be saying) Back at the nest, the sleeping hawklet has rolled over onto his other side, and its bigger sibling watches Mom with interest, imprinting well to her as it should, still with a piece of feather in its beak.

The female (Victoria) who is larger, and who just left the nest perches beside her husband. "Give me that Television controller dear, its your turn to watch the kids, I've had it!" The male (Albert) is giving her no argument. "Certainly dear, you look like you need a break." (He looks as though he just hid his "Beer" behind his back.)

Well the sleeping hawklet has awakened, and now its sibling seems to be getting tired, so its preening its downy plumage, (which is more fluff than feathers) before it settles down for a nap.
Even at so young an age, Ferruginous hawks show an instinctual interest in their personal hygene.
(Note the dark border at the right side of the photo, this is the edge of the peep hole the camera is looking through.)
